LAX Workers Strike Airport on May Day

On May Day, over 250 LAX, baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, passenger service workers, and security screeners participated in a 1-day strike in protest of unfair labor practices by the contractors that employ them.  As bags piled up on the tarmac and planes remained without being cleaned, the 250 workers flanked by about 500 additional LAX workers and supporters, including Congresswoman Janice Hahn and Councilmember Bill Rosendahl, took over the intersection of Century and Avion. They staged a civil disobedience in the middle of the intersection.

“Los Angeles Airport should be a model employer for our community… instead they’re an embarrassment.  They’re putting all this money into modernization and not putting anything into the services these workers provide,” said Alejandra Valles, SEIU-United Service Workers West Vice President.
