Hollywood Rally to Stop in Torrance

MARCH: Union members get support from city officials, actors in three-day event.
From news services

City Council president Eric Garcetti and Esai Morales, former star of "Jericho" and "NYPD Blue," were on hand to begin the march, which was organized by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor to bring attention to upcoming contract negotiations for a variety of unions representing thousands of workers.

"I think this parade is going to be the first step in a new movement in America, to try to bring jobs - good-paying jobs - back to America and protect the jobs you already have," longshoreman Dave Arian told NBC4.

The march began at the La Brea Tar Pits in the Wilshire area, then headed east toward Koreatown. Several hundred unionized janitors joined the march in front of the Wilshire Theater, and the procession made its way toward the Ambassador Hotel, where construction workers were expected to join the parade.

Today, the workers will hold a "Good Jobs" rally at the Vermont Knolls County Administration Building before marching to Torrance, where they will hold another rally in front of a Wal-Mart. The march will end Thursday at the Port of Los Angeles.

"Were taking a beating everywhere," probation officer Bernie Cade told the television station. "Houses are being foreclosed on. Kids are not being able to be fed. People are being turned out. We need to stand up and say no."

The union march got under way on the same day that negotiations began between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on a new contract.
