The NLC, in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education, will offer a course on
Capital Stewardship and Fund Governance
in Los Angeles, Introduced by AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka
Monday & Tuesday, July 14-15, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
This course focuses on the structure and governance of employee benefit plans, with an emphasis on the legal duties of plan trustees, and
- Describes the concept of capital stewardship, which encourages the active and authoritative governance of pension and benefit funds by their trustees;
- Analyzes the authority and roles of pension and benefit fund trustees;
- Examines the establishment and design of new employee benefits and alternate plan options, including VEBAs;
- Covers the special role of defined benefit plans in providing retirement security and the role of defined contribution arrangements as supplemental retirement plans;
- Examines trustees' fiduciary duties and how they influence trustee roles;
- Discusses how and when pension and benefit funds can consider the collateral benefits of their investments; and
- Explores ways trustees can develop, adopt, monitor and enforce fund policies.
