Change to Win is seeking an experienced, bilingual (Spanish/English) communications coordinator to lead a large-scale, worker, coalition and community-based organizing campaign based in the South Bay area of Los Angeles.
Seven unions and six million workers united in Change to Win to build a new movement of working people equipped to meet the challenges of the global economy and restore the American Dream in the 21st century: a paycheck that can support a family, affordable health care, a secure retirement and dignity on the job. The seven partner unions are: International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Laborers' International Union of North America, Service Employees International Union, UNITE HERE, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, United Farm Workers of America, and United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
Job Description: Change to Win campaign communications staff responsibilities may include:
Developing and implementing communications strategy and message framework for specific target audiences to support organizing and political campaigns
Developing, planning, and coordinating traditional and online communications strategies, timelines and tactics for organizing and political campaigns.
Executing earned-media outreach, including, pitching and organizing events, drafting materials and preparing workers, leaders and allies as spokespersons
Creating effective organizing fliers and workplace literature
Writing news releases, leaflets, web site and e-advocacy content, fact sheets, op-eds, talking points, speeches, paid ads, and other materials for workers and the general public
Managing outside vendors and overseeing editorial and design processes for external and internal communications programs
Job Qualifications:
• A strong commitment to social justice and the goals and principles of the union movement.
• A BA and 3-6 years experience in organizing communications, public relations and media outreach, preferably in a union, community or non-profit environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English, including the ability to effectively explain our goals and issues to specific audiences such as the public, workers, public officials, reporters
• Proven track record of strategizing and implementing plans in the context of a campaign.
• Ability to take initiative, to work with a team, and to handle multiple projects and tight deadlines.
• Ability to perform pro-active media outreach, and maintain good working relationships with journalists generating positive media coverage
• Strong professionalism and the ability to maintain good working relationships with staff and leaders of partner organizations
• General computer literacy, proficiency in MAC and PC and willingness to be trained in new programs.
• Willingness to work long, irregular hours, sometimes including weekends, early mornings and evenings.
Preferences: HTML, web-based advocacy experience and/or basic graphic design skills a plus
