Make Three Call to Congress Today and say no to No Child Left Behind

Earlier this month, the LA Labor Movement went on record opposing the current No Child Left Behind legislation. [Click to read the resolution.] Our reason for doing so was simple. The No Child Left Behind Act is hurting our students, teachers and schools. Its failed one-size-fits-all approach to education ignores the individual needs of our students. The current version would also pit teacher against teacher by creating a merit pay system that teachers overwhelmingly oppose.

United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) and teachers across the country are asking for your support in defeating the Miller-Pelosi Reauthorization Proposal for the No Child Left Behind Act. Please do your part by making three calls to:

Congressman George Miller - 925.602.1880 or 202.225.2095

Speaker Nancy Pelosi - 415.556.4862 or 202.225.4965

Your Member of Congress – You can reach them by calling 1.888.268.4334 from a cell phone. Enter your home number at the prompt and you will you will be connected to your Congressional representative.

Join our Court Interpreters in their Fight to Remain in the Middle Class

Court interpreters play a greater role in our lives that many of us don't think about. They are the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves - defendants, victims, witnesses, plaintiffs, parents and children. They are the ears and the voice of the prosecution and the defense. They allow the jury to hear the evidence. They carry the judge's message and they serve all of us in the administration of justice.

Now these court interpreters need a little justice for themselves. These workers, represented by the Communications Workers of America have been negotiating with the Courts since May for a contract that will allow them to maintain a middle class job. Now they are on strike. Let's stand with these workers in their fight to remain in the middle class this Monday. Details are as follows:

What: Rally and march
When: Monday, October 1st
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Where: Criminal Court Building
210 W. Temple, Los Angeles
Please wear orange
