Pushes for a New Contract
With a nearly 85
percent strike vote authorization in their pocket, Local 1000
negotiators headed back to the bargaining table Monday hoping to
conclude a new contract with the Schwarzenegger administration
before the state budget deadline of Thursday, June 15.

"Our members’ vote to authorize a
strike gives our negotiators the strength they need to bring
closure at the bargaining table," said Jim Hard, SEIU Local 1000
president. "We hope
the governor
knows we are serious about calling a strike if his negotiators
don’t offer a decent raise and maintains our current
benefit structure."

— The Long Beach Unified School District and its teachers'
union have reached a tentative agreement for a new, three-year
contract giving teachers a 10 percent pay raise and additional
monetary incentives, union officials announced
Friday.
The agreement, if
approved by the school board and union membership, would
represent an end to an openly contentious bargaining process in
which both sides issued public memos critical of each other's

City Council
Committee Supports Resolution Calling for Justice for Janitors
in the Entertainment Industry Janitors Working
for Major Hollywood Studios Living in
Poverty
The Housing Community and
Economic Development Committee of the Los Angeles City Council
voted unanimously last week to endorse a proposed resolution
calling on Southern
California’s Entertainment Industry to work to
improve conditions for the janitors who clean their
facilities. The resolution was introduced by
Councilmember Ed Reyes and seconded by Council President Eric
Garcetti and Councilmember Wendy Greuel. The resolution is
scheduled for a full vote in Council June 14th and is
expected to pass.
